22-year-old Kazlo Evans Junior is the latest young New Zealander signed to the BNZ Breakers, joining the club on a development player contract for NBL27.
Evans came through the St Kentigern College programme under the guidance of then coach Aaron Young (Wellington Saints and Perth Wildcats), winning a national school’s championship in 2019.
Kazlo first played senior basketball with South Adelaide in NBL1 before debuting in the NZNBL with the Giants in 2023. Evans followed Young to the Wellington Saints in the NZNBL in 2024 before turning out for the Manawatu Jets in the 2026 competition.
That experience includes significant game time in the NZNBL Rapid League, with Evans named to the 2024 Rapid League All Star 5.
Originally from Hamilton, Evans was a walking highlight in school and age group hoops, on one occasion in 2021 scoring 47 points including 12 three-pointers in a game for St Kentigern and was named MVP at the National U17 tournament in 2020.
BNZ Breakers President of Basketball Dillon Boucher sees a high ceiling for Kazlo.
“Kazlo is a small guard that brings a fearless tenacity to both ends of the floor. He already has extensive NZ NBL experience and enjoyed an outstanding season with the Jets alongside the likes of the Webster brothers, learning and rubbing shoulders with some elite level players.
“He brings a high basketball IQ and an ability to run a team, he can score and play defence when required, he is a genuine two-way guard that we are delighted to have on board as a development player, I can’t wait to see his progress at BNZ Breakers HQ.”
Evans is excited to go to work with the BNZ Breakers and further develop his game.
“Signing with the BNZ Breakers is a blessing especially being the only team in our country. It means so much to be a part of this organisation and I’m looking forward to learning and improving my game working with the coaches and alongside some great players.”
Evans junior is following in the basketball footsteps of his father. Kazlo senior played NBL hoops alongside Boucher at Auckland and Waikato (winning the 2002 Championship) and also suited up with the Nelson Giants before he moved into coaching alongside former Giants and Tall Blacks head coach Nenad Vucinic, earning another Championship in 2007.
Evans will be at BNZ Breakers HQ on Thursday this week after fulfilling international commitments.
