NZ Breakers launch new era with ownership change
The New Zealand Breakers are set for a dynamic NBL26 season, energized by a fresh ownership group and a revitalised vision for the franchise and its fans.
Kiwi-American businessman and attorney Marc Mitchell has acquired the Breakers, partnering with local figures Leon Grice (Deputy Chairman), Stephen Grice, and Sean Colgan. Former owners Paul and Liz Blackwell rejoin as shareholders, with Paul serving as a Director.
"Owning the Breakers is a dream," Mitchell stated. "We're building a team that champions New Zealand and resonates globally."
Breakers legend Tom Abercrombie joins the ownership as a Special Advisor to Mitchell. "This blueprint prioritizes fans and community, aiming to restore our on and off-court dominance," Abercrombie said.
The Blackwells expressed enthusiasm for their return, citing Mitchell's dedication to restoring the Breakers' legacy. "We're excited to contribute to the team's full potential," they said.
Mitchell emphasized collaboration with the NBL and Basketball New Zealand, highlighting the league's growth and the surge in youth basketball participation. "We're committed to developing talent pathways," he noted.
NBL Chairman Larry Kestelman welcomed the new ownership, predicting "an exciting new chapter" for the Breakers and New Zealand basketball. "We're eager to support their growth," Kestelman said.
