Breakers Name New Chief Executive Ahead of New NBL Season

She takes over from Matt Walsh who previously held the role in his dual capacity as majority owner, but he relocated back to America last year.

Edser is the natural successor to Walsh, having been the Breakers’ Chief Operating Officer since 2018.

“Lisa was my first hire over 5 years ago and has my complete confidence and trust,” says Walsh from his base in Austin, Texas.

“She has already been fulfilling this role for over a year and we are simply formalizing things to help deliver clarity around leadership.”

Edser brings a wealth of experience to the role including stints at Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED), The New Zealand Rugby Players’ Association and more than 15 years at Emirates Team New Zealand where she was head of marketing and sponsorship.

“Since my return to the United States during Covid, Lisa has been at the helm keeping us all connected. In fairness to Lisa, it has not been an easy task, says Walsh.”

“Lisa has the full support of the ownership group and we are excited for what the future holds for the Breakers.” 

Edser’s appointment comes at a time when the Breakers are experiencing unprecedented growth.

There is renewed interest in the team following its inspiring performances in the Australian National Basketball League (NBL) last season.

Mody Maor’s rebuilt roster drew record viewing and attendance numbers as pushed the defending champion Sydney Kings to five games in the Championship Finals Series before just falling short.

Game 4 drew a record attendance of 9,742 fans at Spark Arena. 

The Breakers’ first game in the new season will be next month at Spark Arena against the Cairns Taipans on September 30.

There is increased interest in the season opener because it doubles as the 400^th game for club captain Tom Abercrombie.

No other player in the club’s history has played as many games, or scored as many points, and at 36 years old, this may well be his farewell season. 

He has also been part of all four championship teams with the Breakers.

A press conference to introduce the new Chief Executive, new imports plus another major off-court announcement will be at 1045am at the club’s headquarters in Auckland later today.
