The BNZ Breakers have completed their preseason campaign, losing to the Japanese B2 League side, the Kumamoto Volters, 90-81 in a tough contest in Japan.
The BNZ Breakers trailed at halftime by 42 – 30 and reduced the margin by full-time.
The BNZ Breakers faced a significant challenge with a depleted roster. An injury to Rob Baker II (back tightness) and a rib injury to Parker Jackson-Cartwright sidelined two key players. Reuben Te Rangi (illness) did not board the plane to Japan. Adding to the woes, both Max Darling and Karim Lopez were out with an illness, leaving the team with only seven healthy players ready to take the court.
The result was the team’s only loss in what has been a dominant build-up to the NBL26 season, after their NBL Blitz win and Friday's victory against the Nagasaki Velca.
Head Coach Petteri Koponen believes the Japan tour was a crucible for the team, forging their spirit against tough international competition. "We've been through the fire in these close games, and the team has come out stronger on the other side. This is exactly the kind of trial we need before the season begins."
BNZ Breakers President of Basketball Operations Dillon Boucher shared his excitement, noting that the on-court results have been great and matched by strong fan interest.
"Kiwis are excited about the return to the black jersey, and we're seeing strong ticket sales for our home opener. Spark Arena is going to shake with the energy."
With their pre-season complete, the BNZ Breakers will now return home to prepare for their NBL26 season opener against the Brisbane Bullets at Spark Arena on Friday, September 19. Fans are encouraged to get their tickets soon to avoid disappointment, as they are selling fast.
